The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The Newberry’s establishment came about because of a contingent provision in the will of Chicago businessman Walter L. Chicago civic organization. The Germanistic Society of America was founded ca. 1904 in New York City. The purpose of the organization was to make arrangements for lecture tours given by noted Germans to encourage a diffusion of knowledge about Germany.
